Hive Hydrogen Invites Proposals for $5.8 Billion South Africa Plant

Jul 07, 2025

Hive Hydrogen, a joint venture between UK-based Hive Energy Ltd. and South Africa’s BuiltAfrica Group, has invited 15 engineering companies to submit proposals for a $5.8 billion green hydrogen project in the Eastern Cape. The plant, expected to start production in 2029, will produce over 1 million tons of green ammonia annually for export to markets like Japan and South Korea. South Africa aims to compete with Namibia as a hydrogen hub, though concerns remain over whether costs can be lowered enough to rival fossil fuels.

Promise and pressure of cost-competitive green hydrogen

09 July 2025

Africa’s energy infrastructure projects have long demonstrated large variations in financing conditions due to country-specific risks and market dynamics

A study questions the feasibility of exporting African green hydrogen to Europe by 2030, noting 34 projects across seven countries, but 90% are still in concept or feasibility stage. Only South Africa’s Sasolburg pilot is operational. Financing is a major challenge, with the cost of capital ranging from 26.5% in Sudan to 10.6% in Morocco. De-risking mechanisms from Europe could cut costs by 42%, making African hydrogen competitive at €3.2–4.9/kg, though without policy support, most projects cannot meet European price benchmarks.

South Africa and Namibia are finalizing a green hydrogen pipeline linking Lüderitz with Boegoebaai, Saldanha Bay, and Gauteng. A 2024 pre-feasibility study confirmed viability, with a N$30 million master plan now underway. Backed by the EU and other financiers, the project will boost socio-economic growth and position both nations as hydrogen leaders. Namibia has already attracted N$2.08 billion in investments, whereas South Africa aims to produce 13 million tons of hydrogen annually by 2050.
